Several houses were evacuated in South Austin on Wednesday when a natural gas line was ruptured by construction crews working on a trench for the Longhorn petroleum pipeline.
Austin firefighters determined that gas concentrations could be dangerous, and they informed nearby residents to remain outdoors. The fear was that explosions could occur inside houses without a lot of ventilation and that residents might inhale too many fumes, Southern Union officials said.
"It was a real bad smell. I was more paranoid about our animals and our children than anything else," said Randy Cavazos, who lives 50 yards from the ruptured gas line. "It makes you a little nervous. I mean, it's pretty dumb when a pipeline company accidentally tears up another pipeline."
