Pipeline concerns
The City Council and I continue to be extremely concerned about the safety of the decades-old Longhorn Pipeline.
I know our community is just as concerned. That is why we have made every effort, including going to court, to demand an environmental impact study be done before operations could get under way. We sincerely appreciate U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks and the comments he made in his ruling. Although Judge Sparks concluded he did not have the authority to prevent the project from moving forward, he also made it very clear that he, too, has grave concerns about the pipeline.
I would hope the federal government and the Office of Pipeline Safety will heed the words of a U.S. district judge and ensure accountability for the safety of everyone who lives near the line -- not just in Austin -- and ensure protection of the environment. I want to thank Sparks for his support of Austin, and of all communities this project affects.
