AUSTIN -- A leak test for a proposed gasoline pipeline is scheduled to begin this morning at a site along Deer Lane in Southwest Austin.
Longhorn Partners Pipeline LP has sealed a test trench with a mixture of cement, sand and water intended to prevent leakage into the honeycomb-like limestone of the Edwards Aquifer, said Don Martin, a spokesman for the partnership of ExxonMobil Pipeline Co. and four other concerns. A mixture of dye and water will be pumped into a 30-foot length of pipe buried in the trench. The pipe has a slit in it to simulate a leak.
The trench will be examined to see if it holds the water and dye. In addition, Barton Springs and other aquifer outlets will be monitored for 30 days to see if any dye shows up. The test, which has been delayed a few days by rain, is required under Longhorn's federally approved plan to move gasoline from Houston to El Paso.
