Longhorn Partners Pipeline LP has begun clearing brush, tree limbs and trash from its 50-foot-wide easement in Southwest Austin. Next week, crews will begin removing 19 miles of 51-year-old buried pipe, said Don Martin, a spokesman for the company. New, thicker-walled pipe will be installed, probably starting in December, he said.

Longhorn is legally entitled to remove virtually anything in its easement.

Martin also said that a leak test performed in September on a portion of the pipeline found that fluids could be contained. No dye was detected at monitoring devices at Barton Springs, he said. The idea is to make 3 1/2 miles of the pipeline trench leakproof by pouring a concrete floor and spraying the sides with a mixture of cement, sand and water to prevent leakage from penetrating into the recharge zone of the Edwards Aquifer.
