Officials of the federal Office of Pipeline Safety are reconsidering a once-broad policy on open records because of concerns that oil and natural gas pipelines might be vulnerable to terrorist attacks.
The Office of Pipeline Safety has long allowed public inspection of most of its records concerning the extensive network of pipes that move crude oil, petroleum products, natural gas and chemicals around the nation. In recent years, it has even posted information about leaks, corrosion and other pipeline problems on its Web site.
Now pipeline safety officials are conducting a broader review of what information, if any, should be released to the public, state regulators and local emergency officials.
