Hearings set on proposed hazardous pipeline ordinance
The City of Austin will sponsor a series of public meetings to get input about a proposed ordinance designed to provide greater public safety by regulating structures near a hazardous pipeline.
The proposed ordinance would require that new construction within 200 feet of a pipeline comply with certain fire protection criteria. In addition, within 200 feet of a pipeline, several types of buildings - such as day cares, primary schools, medical facilities, and elderly care facilities -- could not be built.
Existing structures are not covered by the ordinance. The draft ordinance also sets insurance requirements to ensure that a pipeline company can cover liabilities resulting from environmental or property damage, or personal injury in the event of an accident.
The proposed ordinance is available on the Austin City Connection at www.cityofaustin.org/news/02/downloads/pipe_ord.doc. After the hearings and discussions by several boards and commissions, a revised ordinance is expected to go back to the Austin City Council for consideration in December 2002.
The public hearings, all starting at 6:30 p.m., include:
- Oct. 14: L.B.J. High School, 7309 Lazy Creek Drive
- Oct.21: Johnston High School, 1012 Arthur Stiles Road
- Oct. 28: Langford Elementary School, 2206 Blue Meadow Drive
- Nov. 4: Bowie High School, 4103 Slaughter Lane
The proposed ordinance will be discussed by the Environmental Board on Nov. 13; the Planning Commission, Nov. 20; and the Building/Fire Code Board, Dec. 4.
