Wal-Mart retreats on MoPac plans

Wal-Mart is dumping plans to build a supercenter over the Edwards Aquifer.

The company announced late Wednesday, October 1, that environmental concerns were driving it from the northeast corner of Slaughter Lane and MoPac Boulevard (Loop 1).

"Wal-Mart wants to be a good corporate citizen in Austin, and it was becoming clear that pursuing a store in this location had the potential to hamper our overall efforts to serve the people of this community," Spokeswoman Daphne Moore said in a statement.

Endeavor officials said Wednesday that they are also walking away from the deal, meaning land-owner SR Ridge suddenly has no buyer for its politically flammable tract.

"This just shows what a determined coalition of citizens can accomplish," said Council Member Daryl Slusher.
