Resolution - Austin Neighborhoods Council
No Aquifer Big Box Resolution ñ Austin Neighborhoods Council
WHEREAS, the Austin Neighborhoods Council works to protect the quality of life in Austin neighborhoods and for all of Austin;
WHEREAS, the Edwards Aquifer is a unique and fragile feature of the environment and an important component of AustinÃs quality of life;
WHEREAS, the exceedingly high levels of impervious cover, increased off-site vehicular traffic and risk of accidental hazardous material spillage from ìbig boxî development over areas such as the recharge and contributing zones of the Edwards Aquifer could significantly degrade the water quality of the aquifer;
WHEREAS, currently proposed ìbig boxî development such as the Wal-Mart at the corner of Slaughter and MoPac and the LoweÃs on Brodie Lane could exceed impervious cover levels by two and a half to three times the amount allowed by AustinÃs Save Our Springs Ordinance;
WHEREAS, these projects can degrade the quality of life in neighborhoods through increased traffic, noise pollution, and light pollution;
WHEREAS, the Wal-Mart and LoweÃs projects and other big box retail development over the aquifer are opposed by a large and growing coalition of environmental and community groups including many Austin neighborhood and homeownersà associations;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE AUSTIN NEIGHBORHOODS COUNCIL THAT: The Austin Neighborhoods Council does hereby oppose the Wal-Mart Supercenter at Mopac and Slaughter, the LoweÃs on Brodie Lane and any future big box retail development over the Edwards Aquifer, and calls on the Wal-Mart and LoweÃs corporations to voluntarily move their proposed big box stores to more appropriate locations off the aquifer, and calls on the City of Austin and other local governments to take all available action to prevent Wal-Mart, LoweÃs and other big box development over the aquifer.
