Wal-Mart Resolution - Austin Sierra Club

WHEREAS, the Austin Regional Group of the Sierra Club is dedicated to protecting and preserving the environment and quality of life in Austin;

WHEREAS, the Edwards Aquifer is a unique and fragile feature of the environment and is the water source for Barton Springs;

WHEREAS, the exceedingly high levels of impervious cover from ìbig boxî development over areas such as the recharge and contributing zones of the Edwards Aquifer put enormous amounts of pollutants into the aquifer and degrading the water quality of the aquifer and the springs;

WHEREAS, the proposed ìbig boxî development planned by Wal-Mart at the corner of Slaughter and MoPac could exceed impervious cover levels by three times the amount allowed by the Save Our Springs Ordinance, the City of Austinís renowned water quality ordinance;

WHEREAS, these projects as proposed are opposed by numerous neighborhood and environmental groups for environmental reasons as well as raising serious concerns about increased traffic, noise pollution, and light pollution;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE AUSTIN SIERRA CLUB THAT:

The Austin Sierra Club does hereby oppose the proposed development by Endeavor and Wal-Mart, which would increase pollution in Barton Springs and the Edwards Aquifer, and we urge that WalMart not build a new store in the Barton Springs Recharge Zone.
